Maison Royale de Saint-Louis

The Maison Royale de Saint-Louis was established on June 15, 1686, at Saint-Cyr (now the commune of Saint-Cyr-l'École, Yvelines) in France by King Louis XIV at the request of his secret second wife, Françoise d'Aubigné, Marquise de Maintenon. The school was designed to provide education for girls from impoverished noble families and marked an evolution in female education under the Ancien Régime.

The establishment lost its leading role following the deaths of Louis XIV and Françoise d'Aubigné, but it continued to operate until March 1793, when it closed due to the French Revolution. The empty buildings were later taken over by the École spéciale militaire de Saint-Cyr in 1808.
