The Château de Belcastel is situated above the north bank of the river Aveyron, downstream from Rodez, in the commune of Belcastel, Aveyron département, France.

History

  • The oldest part of the castle was constructed in the 9th century. It grew in the hands of the Belcastel family, who later became the seat of the famed Saunhac family for many decades. The Château de Belcastel was officially declared a historic monument by the French Ministry of Culture in 1928.

Architectural Style and Layout

The castle's architectural style is medieval, with a mix of Romanesque and Gothic influences. Fernand Pouillon, a renowned French architect, discovered the castle in ruins in 1974 and undertook its reconstruction between 1975 and 1983.

Historical Significance and Events

  • The Château de Belcastel played a significant role in French history, particularly during the medieval period. Pouillon's restoration efforts not only preserved the castle but also restored the nearby village to its former glory, earning it recognition as one of Les Plus Beaux Villages de France.

Current Status and Use

In 2005, the owners of the AFA Gallery in New York purchased the château and opened it to the public as both a gallery and a historical monument. The interior has been embellished with medieval artifacts, while allowing the medieval fortress and remarkable architecture to remain undisturbed.

Heritage Status

The Château de Belcastel is a historic monument declared by the French Ministry of Culture in 1928. In 2017, Heidi Leigh, one of the owners, was honoured with a medal by the French Ministry of Culture for her efforts in promoting art and architecture through AFA Gallery.
