Château de Pitray
The Château de Pitray is a 17th-century castle located in Saint-Seurin-de-Prats, Aquitaine, France, overlooking the Dordogne river.
History
- Built on an ancient tumulus also known as Mothe de Prats, the house was constructed by Gabriel de Ségur, seigneur of Pitray, in 1626. The name "Pitray" is derived from Pic du Roy, or king's peak, signifying that it was built on land higher than the plain.
- Over the centuries, the castle changed hands several times, passing through the Puch family and eventually coming to rest with the descendants of Pierre de Ségur in 1900.
Architecture
The original main part of the house consisted of two wings of equal size in the shape of perpendicular rectangles, delimiting a courtyard that opened out onto the Dordogne River. In 1905, a Bordeaux architect joined the two wings by a massive flat-roofed building and an Italianate terrace lined with pilasters.
