Château du Plessis

The Château du Plessis is situated in the commune of Écuillé, Maine-et-Loire department, France, on Allée du Plessis.

History

  • Built between 1468 and 1472 by Finance Minister Jean Bourré for King Louis XI, the château has remained largely unmodified since its construction. It was once owned by La Maison De Nuchèze, with notable family members including Jacques de Nuchèze and his descendants.
  • The château was purchased in 1911 by Henry Vaïsse, who bequeathed it to his nephew François Reille-Soult, Duke of Dalmatie. Since 2010, it has been inhabited by descendants of François Reille-Soult.

Architecture

The Château du Plessis is a manor castle with a fully working drawbridge. Its architectural style and layout have remained largely intact since its construction.

Historical Significance

  • The château was classified as a Monument historique in 1931, recognizing its historical significance. It has also been the location for numerous films, including Peau d'Âne (1970), Louis XI (1989 telefilm), Le Bossu (1997), Fanfan la Tulipe (2003), and The Princess of Montpensier (2009).

Current Status and Use

The château is currently inhabited by descendants of François Reille-Soult, who manage its upkeep. It has been the longest stay of a single family since 1473.

Heritage Status

The Château du Plessis-Bourré was classified as a Monument historique in 1931, recognizing its historical significance.
