Fort Namutoni

Fort Namutoni is situated on the eastern edge of the Etosha pan in the Oshikoto Region of northern Namibia.

The fort was built in 1896 as a German Police post and, as part of the Red Line, a veterinary control point. It later served as a holding facility for English prisoners during World War I and then as a police post before being used as a South African Army base. The original fort was destroyed in 1904 following the Battle of Namutoni and was rebuilt shortly thereafter.

Architecture

The current fort is believed to date from around 1957, when it was restored to its present state. It features a unique blend of architectural styles, reflecting its history as a military outpost and police station. The fort's layout is characterized by its imposing walls and bastions, which provide stunning views of the surrounding Etosha pan.
