Castellet de Banyoles

History

• Built around the first half of the 4th century BC, this ancient Iberian city and archaeological site was a fortified settlement. Its life came to an end in a generalised destruction, possibly due to a Roman siege during the Revolts of Indibil and Mandonius (206-205 BC) or the Campaign of Cato the Elder (195 BC).
• Evidence of a Roman camp has been identified outside the walled enclosure.

Architecture

The site is mainly known for its pentagonal towers flanking the entrance, unique among the protohistoric fortifications of the Iberian Peninsula. The castle's layout is characterized by its fortified walls and gates, designed to protect the settlement from invaders.
